Broadband Technician
Holston Electric Cooperative seeking Broadband Technician.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Broadband Technician is responsible for terminating, splicing and installing a variety of fiber optic connectors and enclosures including both loose tube and ribbon fiber. Other responsibilities shall include performance of aerial construction, including but not limited to, installing aerial fiber and fiber storage (snow shoes), completing pole transfers and performing cleanup work. The Broadband Technician will also perform underground construction activities, including but not limited to, pulling new cable/fiber through conduits, digging up and repairing damaged conduit and underground vaults or pedestals.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 2-4 years of splicing experience in telecommunications or utility industry required.
- Proven ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
TECHNICAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficiently use fiber tools and fiber optic test equipment including fusion splicer, power meter and OTDR. Must have extensive experience in splicing multiple count (144 count min.) ADSS and Armored fiber using ring cuts and butt splices and be able to demonstrative knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
- Construct, maintain, and operate a Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) gigabit passive optical network (GPON), the active Ethernet System, and any fiber optic plant or fiber optic system.
- Assist in maintaining video reception and video delivery equipment.
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot triple play services such as video (in all forms RF, analog, digital, IPTV, and app-based), data (active Ethernet, high-speed Internet over the GPON Network, and direct fiber connections), and voice services (POTS, SIP-based services, and familiarity with VOIP phone systems).
- Knowledge of applicable electronic equipment and specialty tools.
- Ability to troubleshoot damaged fiber, effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to read, understand and update splice documentation and maps as required.
- Be available for 7 day / 24 hour stand by periods as needed.
- Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must be able to record and organize paperwork via hardcopy and electronic format.
- Organized with a strong attention to detail and capable of working with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to read, comprehend and interpret site plans, construction drawings and scopes of work.
- Thorough understanding of the local permitting process and requirements for all work activities requiring permits, including traffic control.
- Must be able to create materials list based on plans/scope of work, order and compile materials for crew in advance of deployment.
- Industrial First Aid and CPR certifications and experience preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in construction skills, including underground and aerial telecommunication construction techniques, fiber splicing techniques, emergency restoration practices, and general industry knowledge.
- Job related certifications such as safety, fiber training and experience with various manufacturers.
- Perform other related duties as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS
- Ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 75 lbs.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces.
- May be required to work long and unpredictable hours, including work after normal business hours in the event physical restoration of fiber plant is needed.
- On-call availability is essential.
- Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather.
- Climb and use ladders on poles for accessing aerial fiber plant.
OFFICE HOURS:
- Normal business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but may vary for this position.
- May be required to work long and unpredictable hours, including work after normal business hours in the event physical restoration of fiber plant is needed.
