The University of Virginia's College at Wise invites applications for a Police Officer in the Campus Police Department. Police Officers provide professional police service to the University community. They have responsibility for enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, the policies and regulations of the University, and providing a secure environment for the members of the University community. They perform technical activities, enforce laws, respond to emergencies, control traffic and crowds, prevent crime, and provide other services that are essential to the core responsibilities of the police department. These are armed, sworn positions. Officers patrol independent of supervision, independently identify problems, and determine a response based on their judgment.

  •  Provide public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. 
  • Investigate traffic and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed.
  • Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic and criminal cases. 
  • Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area. \b Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. 
  • Patrol assigned area, responding promptly to calls for assistance.
  • Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. 
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School graduate or G.E.D./ Virginia DCJS Law enforcement Officer Certification. Experience: Must be 21 years of age or older. Excellent Written and verbal communication skills. Must have skill to handle firearms and operate a motor vehicle safely. Applicants must demonstrate responsive, approachable, and courteous engagement with the community. The ability to maintain a calm, balanced perspective, and successfully complete duties in a stressful situation is essential, as is the ability to analyze situations and use good judgment. Strong oral and written communications, including writing accurate reports, testifying in court, and interacting with a diverse community is required. Licensure: A valid Virginia driver's license with a positive points balance is required. If applicants are from out of state, the ability to get a Virginia license by the start date of the position is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Standing and sitting for extended periods of time, driving, lifting, traveling and the use of both hands, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing ladders and stairs and heavy lifting.
